Antique French Mazagran coffee cup. Heavy quality porcelain, hand-painted with light blue bands and black lines.
Paris, circa 1900.
The cup model is named after Mazagran, a classic iced coffee consisting of espresso, cold water, sugar, and a splash of fresh lemon juice. Named after Fort Mazagran in Algeria, where French soldiers drank this beverage during the colonial wars around 1840. They subsequently took the recipe home, where it became very popular. Mazagran was drunk from a thick porcelain cup without a handle, a timeless design that also became popular for drinking 'regular' coffee.
